The death has just been announced of Alan Bean who accompanied Charles "Pete" Conrad in the Lunar Module in Apollo 12, November 1969. Conrad died in a motor cycle accident in 1999.
This, the second moon landing took place at a site in the Oceanus Procellarum (Ocean of Storms) right next to where a lunar lander, Surveyor 3, had landed years earlier. The astronauts brought back bits of the lander so that the effects of the lunar environment on its materials could be evaluated, back on earth. Unfortunately, they made the mistake of pointing the TV camera into the sun, so we never got to see more than a minute or so of their EVA, on the lunar surface. ... walk-moon/
After two successful landings, Apollo 13 was dispatched to the Fra Mauro highlands in April 1970. This could have turned out to be a huge tragedy, following the explosion in the command service module but the courage of the astronauts, with the incredible work done back at Houston by Gene Krantz and his team, brainstorming and analysing endless scenarios, combined to bring the astronauts home. The film Apollo 13 is a pretty good representation of the events as they unfolded.

Protestors are much more violently opposed to fur than they are to leather. Why? Because it's much easier to hassle rich women than bikers.
