In case you weren't aware the flu vaccine for over 65s is different this year.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinati ... a-vaccine/

I have had mine and live to tell the tale.

Our doctors surgery hasn't got any yet, I asked last week about it.

Had mine last week, no reaction, not even a sore arm.

A bit worrying, because if my body has not produced any antibodies it might not fight the real thing!

It is in North Norfolk Ray :wink4:
I have never had it and as yet don't want to, my choice, though some will say not a wise one.

If you have ever had real flu and not just a bad cold, you would change your mind. The older you get the more difficult it gets to make a full recovery. The ball is in your court, but I know what the sensible thing to do is.

I think I would agree with that.

I have had it ever since I first became eligible. That has included times of low resistance - heart attack, ten years as a carer, wife going into care and eventually passing - so far without a dose of flu. I'll be 81 in a few weeks and think I would have succumbed by now.

People complain about reactions, but it is like side effects from medication, but they're nor compulsory. i have a few reactions, sometimes a sore arm, once or twenty 24 hour "seediness", but usually, like this year, not even a sore arm.

I agree with you all, and no I don't think I have ever had proper flu, and yes it is my choice,
if I get flu you will be the first to know and then you can all say 'told you so'
but till then will stick to my Echinacea and Vit C, :sorry:

I had one last year without any ill effects and will have one this year as soon as our surgery gets some in.

if I get flu you will be the first to know

If you get flu posting on here will be the last , not the first first, thing you will be wanting to do!

I must say that having been involved in the big outbreaks of the fifties, both as an emergeny nurse (in the forces we all had to turn to an deliver meals, medicines etc.) and eventually as a victim, that is one of the few times I genuinely thought I was going to die, and I was only 18 then!

I've had the injection for the past 20 years and will have it again as soon as the surgery has them in stock - probably in the next week or so.

The only reaction I get (if any) is a slight tenderness in the arm - but only when I touch the spot where I was injected.

A very sad report in our local paper that a boy of ten died from pneumonia, within a few hours of developing influenza.

The report begged parents to ensure all children receive the 'flu vaccine.

I never heard that before? Surely, the idea was that children develop their own immunity?

Are you suggesting we do away with vaccination/immunisation?

i'm old enough to know about the scourges of smallpx, diptheria, polio, and a dozen other childhood killers, and wouldn't want to see them return.

That would be the Asian flu outbreak? I was a schoolboy at the time, I got it too - and it was horrible!

Ah yes, I remember the Asian flu outbreak. I was at boarding school and we all got it. Horrid - but at least I got to go home early that term!

You may well have had the antibodies already Laurie. Especially if you'd had previous jabs.

For the earlier fifties out break only about thirty of us did not succumb. We each had a roomful of thirty to care for - drinks, meals, medicine distribution and dosage, bed changing, washing (the patients, not clothing).

Stood me in good stead for the second outbreak. I was on a different base and one of only half a dozen to stay healthy (at first) and it was much more difficult..

On the last day, when the MO said that the emergency would be declared over on the morrow he took one look at me and sent me to bed.

I stayed there ten days. That was the rime I thought I was going to die!

No, Laurie - The report was talking about - the 'flu jab - for children.

Not any other vaccines.

I looked a bit more into it and a nasal spray vaccine against influenza is now given ONLY to children with an impaired immune system.

Most medical studies and scholarly articles advise NOT to give the nasal spray to healthy children, they have to build up their own immunity.

Within 6 hours of the injection, I started sweating, being sick and my temperature went through the roof. Fortunately the wife was at home but, it was so serious the Essex Air Ambulance helicopter was called. In the Resus room at Broomfield hospital they managed to stabilize me following two goes with the "Paddles" It turned out that the bit of sticky tape the nurse had put on, over the injection, had fallen off :opps:
