Day one was to a caravan site at Cliburn, in the Eden Valley, near Penrith. To the west, the Lakeland Fells, to the East, Cross Fell, Little Dun Fell and Great Dun Fell. Great views. Next day we had a walk around Keswick and then walked round Crummock Water. Afterwards, a visit to my old town of Cockermouth and a pint of Jennings, in my old local, the Swan.
Next day was a toss up between a Lakeland peak or Cross Fell. We decided on the latter, as I'd only been there once, in 1960. A long trek up Teesdale and got drenched and saw nothing!
This time we went from the tiny hamlet of Kirkland, on a nice day. The climbing was not arduous but gradual, it was at least 4 miles to get to the summit. That's the steepest part of the climb, the last few hundred feet to the summit, where there are tall cairns at regular intervals, as the summit is often covered in clouds - as it was today! However, before we entered the clouds, there was a fantastic view down Upper Teesdale, the source of the Tees is just before the summit, which is 2,930 feet. Here there's a cross shaped shelter, where we had our lunch. We had sweated buckets in the heat coming up - but were glad that we had taken our anoraks as it was decidedly parky on the top. If we'd had somebody to pick us up at Dufton we could have gone there via Little and Great Dun Fells and that would have been great - but we had to retrace our steps as the car was at Kirkland.
After that we went to Moffat in Scotland, then to near Berwick where we had a couple of days on the beautiful Northumberland coast - but I'll leave a description of that until later, together with photos.
