An interesting and informative reaction to the video.
Of course the pertinent point is that it is Not Sussex!!

Time to unstick this thread and the other?
I'll do it on Sunday unless anyone give a good reason otherwise.

Re: A warning and a conundrum

IME there are various methods used to recover files. Some will recover whole blocks of memory containing a file you want restored and in the process give the whole block of memory the name of the file recovered. That will increase the size of a file. Look at the file sizes that you have recovered. W...

Re: The Sound Of Silence

I think the BBC have far too many added sounds to their broadcasts, particularly music and sounds overlaying speech.
It is almost as if they are trying to find something for the sound experts to do.
Get rid of the BBC licence fee.
It has lost its way.

No you making it up as you are going along. A couple of tweets supposedly quoting Hunt and the witch hunt began. He said what he said, people heard it. He can say what he likes, but it's not consequence-free. If a sector wants more women to join, talking about them like that shows why they are put-...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

There are many instances and examples from the past where they have been able to be both amenable to peaceful protesters and robust towards those choosing to use violence. They were quite robust to the people kettled in Whitehall after the BLM protest - rode them down with horses to gather them tog...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

As I thought, there is no evidence. His speech was not recorded. But there was an audience and those membership bodies would have been able to ask, before they reached their conclusions. No you making it up as you are going along. A couple of tweets supposedly quoting Hunt and the witch hunt began.

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

A somewhat rambling argument in an attempt to justify police behaviour. If you think about it, it is the job of the police to be prepared for any eventuality. They are not doing their job properly if they allow crimes to be committed that they were able to prevent. Their job is not to support or an...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

I think he also said women didn't belong in labs working alongside men. Be honest - would you be happy if a female supervisor said these things and was also in charge of your career progression. I don't think that is true. Links to any evidence? There are many reports of his speech, pointing out th...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

It was more about police standing by and doing nothing while a crowd of anarchists were committing criminal damage. Police making a political statement by taking the knee. Police standing by and doing nothing while the idiots of Extinction Rebellion brought London to a standstill. Failing to arrest...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

I have just listened to all that video and, having scrubbed my brain, have not revised my opinion of Scruton. The first two thirds is just the whimpering of a thwarted bigot. It then gets interesting when he starts on scapegoating until he tries to shoehorn his imagined bête noire, PC, into it when...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

What Tim Hunt said. "Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. "Three things happen when they are in the lab: you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticise them they cry." I come from a very similar background to Hunt, but have always had a very different attitude...

Re: PC and the witch hunt explained.

I am not surprised that both Lighthouse and king edward have responded as they have. They didn't listen to the argument and reasoning. It is far more important to them to hound and destroy what they fear rather than listen and understand to what is being said. Such behaviour and mode of operation is...

Re: Too hot!

It's the high humidity that is the problem.
My Australian friend at boarding school was completely knocked out by our hot weather yet he found the higher temperatures at home (somewhere in the NW of New South Wales) quite bearable.

From what history tells us we'd take a lot longer and not do the job as well as the ancient Egyptians.

Re: Wow!

It would take several men a very long time to shift 4000 tonnes. Remember the song from the 50s, 16 tons, by Tennessee Ernie Ford? There are very few men who could shift that amount, even on a 12 hour shift. 10 tons is probably nearer the mark and you would certainly know that you'd done it, by the...

More than 5m deep and 10m in diameter. 20 shafts have been found but it seems that there will be 30. That's one hell of a tonnage to shift, especially as they didn't have a JCB or a dragline! I've just worked it out. It's more than 4000 tonnes per shaft. But a single man could do it over time or a ...

I will take some convincing that this is proof of a feat of civil engineering.
Anyone can dig a hole given time and the drive to do it.
Anyone can measure long distances relatively accurately with no tools.
One man could have done it.

Re: Why Are The British Tea Drinkers?

I don't think we are a tea-drinking nation now, at least not how we used to be.
At one time not so long ago the tea almost all of us drink today (in bags ugh!) would have been sent to Russia and other countries who couldn't afford anything other than dust.

IME that occurs when you have been making a reply to someone and not sent it.
Sometimes even if you haven't written anything the computer will sense a change and ask the question.
Nothing to worry about IMO.
